How to Choose an Outfit for your Headshot Session - Orlando Headshot Photographer

The most common question I get from my headshot clients is “What do you think I should wear?” So I thought I’d walk you through some questions you could ask yourself to help you pick out the perfect outfit!

Where will you be using this photo?

If your photo will strictly be used for a particular company’s website, then you might consider wearing a shirt or blazer that is embroidered with the company logo. If you have a regular uniform that those clients will always see you in, that might be the best choice! Remember that the point of a headshot is to help people get to know you and recognize you, so it’s ok if it’s showing you in your regular daily wear.

However, if the image is going to be used in a variety of places (social media, website, magazines, newsletters, etc) I would suggest to avoid any logos on your clothing.

What is standard attire in your industry?

Is it customary for professionals in your industry to be in a black or navy suit every day? Do you want to blend in with the expectations or does your personality tend to stand out from the crowd? If you are the owner of your own company, what is the vibe of your organization? Is it more laid back and approachable or is it important to communicate to your clients your professionalism and trustworthiness? You don’t have to wear a solid top with a blazer or a suit and tie just because it’s a headshot session. Wear what feels right for you and your business!

Dr. Collman felt it was important for her photos to be taken in her office space and to show her in her scrubs and lab coat, beginning to establish her expert status as a medical provider.

He might work in Property Management, but the joy bursts right out of him so this outfit was a perfect representation of his personality!

Mercedes might be a lawyer but neutral-colored suits just don’t match her personality, so she wore this gorgeous dress and we chose a background color that complemented it perfectly!

What makes you feel good?

If you don’t have anything specific to match color-wise or style-wise, think about what colors you like to see yourself in? What types of clothes make you feel good about yourself? Think about when a friend compliments you - what are you wearing when that happens? I would still recommend to steer clear of very bold patterns that could ultimately overpower you or distract attention from your face in your headshot, but when it comes down to it, if you feel good in the clothes you’re wearing, we will all be able to see it in your expression.

Don’t forget we live in Florida!

Living in Orlando means we the criteria for professional dress is a little more relaxed. Sleeveless tops for women are common in a business casual wardrobe and men might skip a tie or jacket or even both. It would definitely be out of place to see a Floridian in a thick scarf or heavy coat most of the year, so consider that when choosing your outfit.
